A Pocketful of Sunshine!

Social forces influenced my crafting behavior. The title was inspired by the movie Easy A.  It was background noise while I was working. I liked it! I even laughed out loud a couple of times.   Especially during this scene...

I'll admit I was humming it and probably dancing a little bit. When the song was over, this was the result of "getting my craft on"...a pocketful of sunshine!

I used the card sketch from Club Scrap's August 2016 Card Sketch challenge and tweaked it just a little bit.

Club Scrap member Ruby gave me the idea. I saw these cards on Ruby's blog and I thought it looked like a shirt collar! Aren't they cute?

img_20160816_162816_584

Then, I found a template for a Father's Day shirt pocket card on Holiday Crafts and Creations and gussied it up with elements from the Sunflowers Lite kit.

I searched through my sentiment stamps for something fitting and found this one from Club Scrap's Haberdashery kit from 2008. I stamped it on the inside of the card. ( I didn't want to get anything on my shirt!)

🎶You are my Sunshine!🎶

This was Little Eudie...

Guitar Grandma Judy_edited-2

I knew her as Grandma Judy. She grew up during the Depression on a plantation in North Louisiana near Shreveport. She sang on KWKH radio in the 1930's before it was Louisiana Hayride, and they changed her name from Eudie to Judy! She became an Air Force wife, after marrying my Cajun grandfather at the start of World War II, and had nine children. She raised her children alone after my grandfather died in 1965. She never married again, and kept his memory alive with stories and pictures for all the 27 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren who never knew him. Grandma introduced us to old time gospel music, artists like Gene Autry and  Jimmie Davis, and lots of folk music as rock and roll took precedence on the radio. She was fond of road trips, and those long drives were filled with stories and songs. "You are My Sunshine" was a favorite tune! This art journal layout is a tribute to my 1970's childhood and Grandma Judy who helped shape it...

I even made a little "how-to" video featuring her favorite song!

I designed my art journal background in Photoshop Elements (PSE).

I printed on tissue paper!  While trying to figure out the "how" of getting the design in my art journal, I remembered my roll of Tim Holtz  melange tissue wrap. I found a great tutorial on printing on regular tissue paper and tested it out. The effect was perfect!

I printed the other elements on Club Scrap card stock.

Imagine Sunflowers!

A few weeks ago, I was a guest blogger at Club Scrap. I decided at the last minute to film a quick video to go with my post.  I spent the last four years shooting and videoing high school football and baseball games. I will miss doing it and wanted to test out my skills filming my art journal process. I enjoyed it so much, I had to do it again! I have wanted to try this stencil technique for awhile, and I decided to make a video testing it out totally unrehearsed...

Gosh I love how this card turned out! It reminds me of a vintage seed packet. Grunge and distress is not my usual style, but taking a new path is an adventure!

Like a Rock

My dad is a man of few words, but his writing is movingly expressive. I remember finding treasures that he wrote to mom or my grandparents and thinking, "WOW, my dad wrote that?" Just having him say, "Sit down, we need to talk," was enough to bring tears to my eyes, it still is! He knew just what to say, and he usually cut right to the chase. I'd find myself spilling my guts whether I wanted to or not. He's fair and he's firm and ninety-nine percent of the time, he's right. Everything he does, he gives 110% and he expected the same from all five of us. To disappoint him was worse than any punishment he would dish out. He wrote this a long time ago and it is too good not to share. Pap's words of Wisdom or Bullshit. You decide...

"Never tell how you really feel, because then there is no mystery. Always say, "I feel great everything is good", you may even convince yourself. Never say what you really think, unless you are willing to kick someone's ass to prove it. The young person sleeps to rest the body, the old person sleeps to rest the mind and soul. The young person counts the minutes, the old person counts the days. You are young once, you are old the rest of your life. The young person agonizes over what will I be when I grow up, the old person agonizes over how to stay young. Always do the right thing at the present, and you will never regret the past or dread the future."Can't" never did a damn thing. There ain't no "Why"!"

He is a fantastic grandfather to all of our children. He never misses a ball game or event. He might be late, but he's still there. He coached my brothers in football and baseball and carried that tradition down to the grand kids. He coached my youngest son Jake from t-ball and pee wee football until he started junior high. Jake thinks he hung the moon. Dad made this video last fall for Jake's senior year. Turns out, he's pretty good at that too.

Love ya Dad.

Que sera, sera...

🎶Whatever will be, will be. The future's not ours to see, que sera, sera🎶

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade (or pretty things!). The epitome of careless and free...kitten heels with feathers and flowers!

I always wanted some feathery heels like that... I'm a HUGE klutz though, and that would be an accident waiting to happen if I put them on my feet. I'll stick with brightly painted toes and my Birkenstocks. It's safer!

I had fun with this design. I wanted to use the shoe stamp image from Club Scrap's Steppin' Out kit, but I wanted it to be bigger. I stamped the image and scanned it, so I could manipulate it in Photoshop Elements (PSE).

Shoe Step 1

I used Club Scrap digital images from Bistro, Sunflowers and  CS Masks Vol.1 to make the background. I recolored the Sunflowers digital "paper" to fit my lime, fuschia and black color scheme. I just love the watercolor resist look of the background!

Shoe Step 2

I wanted the sunflower image to be a vintage shoe clip, so I resized it to fit.

Shoe Step 3

I colored the sunflower image with Derwent Coloursoft colored pencils, "fussy cut" the sunflower image and added bling with stickles. Topped it with a spatter of white paint for effect and voila!

🎶I'm Walking on Sunshine!🎶

I started humming when I saw this quote...

You know you can't listen to that song and not want to get up and dance! It's on my "walking" playlist on my iPhone. It helps to put a little spring in your step. Maybe I should play it when I clean house too!

I started cleaning my craft room (GASP!) and got distracted. I sat at my computer for a Facebook break and next thing I'm designing a digital card. Shrug. I wanted to incorporate the song lyrics into my card, so I tested out the type on a path tool in Photoshop Elements (for the first time!) and voila!

[caption id="attachment_2223" align="alignnone" width="1920"]Walking on Sunshine card Club Scrap Sunflower digital kit elements and Dylusions Couture stamp image.[/caption]

I printed the card base and the sunflower element on card stock and colored the sunflower with colored pencils. I added Stickles. Distress Stickles and some Distress Ink on the edges to add a border. I LOVE my little sunflower! Haute couture on the sunshine runway!

Sunshine is my FAVORITE accessory!

Creativity in Full Bloom

"If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?" ~Albert Einstein

I work best when my desk is a mess. I don't know why?  I do lose things on it though. I'll put something down and it's like it gets sucked into another dimension only to reappear later. When I really get into a project, I feel like I lose time. I'll look up and realize I've been working for hours. Those are creative days!

My creativity was in full bloom today. I started out playing around in Photoshop Elements (PSE) out of boredom, and ended up creating a hybrid card. I created the base in PSE using elements from Club Scrap's Sunflower digital kit, and resized the sunflower element to fit on the Pin Up Queen Dylusions stamp.

Capture

I printed everything onto white card stock and cut the pieces out. I used Derwent Inktense pencils to color the images and added texture and shine with Stickles, Distress Stickles, Glossy Accents and Wink of Stella.  Hours later and a crick in my neck, my sun(flower) bather was ready to work on her tan! Isn't she beautiful "dahling"? I can almost hear her calling for the cabana boy!

Oh cabana boy! Refill please!

Wings

I was driving listening to Sirius radio, 70's on 7, daydreaming in traffic. A song by Wings came on and flashback!

The summer of '76...

My dad sold Coppertone suntan lotion in the summer while he was in dental school. He set up and serviced Coppertone displays in stores. His territory went all the way to Panama Beach along the Gulf coast. My mom, baby sis Stephanie, and I would tag along and hang out in the hotel pools while Dad worked. My Aunt Janie mailed us matching string bikinis to wear. Steph and I were the belles of the pool! We swam in our floaties and ate chips and ice cream sandwiches from the concession stand,  while mom worked on her Coppertone tan. Paul McCartney and Wings sang "Silly Love Songs" hourly on the radio. I knew every word! Ten years later, we still had bottles of Coppertone sun lotion in the bathroom cabinet when I was in high school! Funny how a song can trigger a memory like that.

I made these cards with wings in mind. Butterflies and dragonflies make me think of summer and how the days just flutter by.
