Spirit of '76

In 1976 a wave of patriotism and nostalgia swept the nation as we celebrated America's Bicentennial. Everybody got in on the celebration...Disneyland, DisneyWorld, commercial products, the '76 Olympics, the Superbowl, Major League Baseball...even Schoolhouse Rock!

I was 7 and my little sister Stephie was 3. I wanted to be a gymnast and do flips on the balance beam like Nadia Comaneci in the summer olympics; Steph wanted to do whatever I did!

Daddy sold Coppertone suntan lotion that summer while he was in dental school. He set up and serviced Coppertone displays in stores. His territory went all the way to Panama Beach along the Gulf coast. Mom, Steph, and I would tag along and hang out in the hotel pools while Dad worked. My Aunt Janie mailed us matching string bikinis to wear.

Steph and I were the belles of the pool! We swam in our floaties and ate chips and ice cream sandwiches from the concession stand,  while mom worked on her Coppertone tan. Paul McCartney and Wings sang “Silly Love Songs” hourly on the radio. I knew every word! Everybody thought Steph was the Coppertone Girl!

Those happy memories inspired my  Spirit of '76 art journal layout.

JFF Spirit of 76 Art Journal 030E DTlogo

I made a video of the process with some fun songs from 1976!

I used stamps from JFF Rubber Stamps. The stamptangle hot air balloons remind me of some of the groovy designs from the 70's!

I designed the quote in Photoshop Elements and printed on Strathmore Colored Pencil paper; I like the texture of it. The font is Wicked Seventies and was perfect with my theme!

  5. I don’t have time right now to watch your video but your layout is soooo cute! Love all those stamps together! I like your swimsuits too. I still think fondly of this olympics swimsuit I had one year when I was little. I wish they made one like it again for grownups! Lol. Enjoy your holiday!

Aww, thanks for the fun memories. I graduated from high school in 1976, so all of these fun memories were shared ones. Except for you and your sister, looking so cute in your bikinis of course. Happy Wednesday and Happy 4th of July! ~smile~ Roseanne
