Spirit of '76

In 1976 a wave of patriotism and nostalgia swept the nation as we celebrated America's Bicentennial. Everybody got in on the celebration...Disneyland, DisneyWorld, commercial products, the '76 Olympics, the Superbowl, Major League Baseball...even Schoolhouse Rock!

https://youtu.be/gdZYyY7g8g4

I was 7 and my little sister Stephie was 3. I wanted to be a gymnast and do flips on the balance beam like Nadia Comaneci in the summer olympics; Steph wanted to do whatever I did!

Daddy sold Coppertone suntan lotion that summer while he was in dental school. He set up and serviced Coppertone displays in stores. His territory went all the way to Panama Beach along the Gulf coast. Mom, Steph, and I would tag along and hang out in the hotel pools while Dad worked. My Aunt Janie mailed us matching string bikinis to wear.

Steph and I were the belles of the pool! We swam in our floaties and ate chips and ice cream sandwiches from the concession stand,  while mom worked on her Coppertone tan. Paul McCartney and Wings sang “Silly Love Songs” hourly on the radio. I knew every word! Everybody thought Steph was the Coppertone Girl!

Those happy memories inspired my  Spirit of '76 art journal layout.

I made a video of the process with some fun songs from 1976!

I used stamps from JFF Rubber Stamps. The stamptangle hot air balloons remind me of some of the groovy designs from the 70's!

I designed the quote in Photoshop Elements and printed on Strathmore Colored Pencil paper; I like the texture of it. The font is Wicked Seventies and was perfect with my theme!

Under the Sea!

UPDATE July 7, 2018:

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320"] TOP 3 pick at Always Fun Challenges![/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="180"] Southern Girls Winner's Circle! [/caption]

I missed the beach trip with the Chapman's this year...beach hair, flip flops and sand between my toes. The next best thing to paradise is to get lost in my art room! Not exactly the same, but it was relaxing. Jake made me a Pina Colada to sip on AND I wore my flip flops. I even spilled a little embossing powder on the floor that felt like sand. Eh, I'll get my trip at the end of the summer!

This week's Cupcake Inspirations theme challenge is Under the Sea!

CIC 449

Our sponsor this week is Birch Press Designs and they are offering a $20 gift certificate to our randomly chosen winner. Make something and share it with us for a chance to win!

I created lots of layers of ink, coloring, gluing and heat embossing (I love to watch it melt)!

A Shirt Fit for a King!

Father's Day is right around the corner! They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I never know what to get, so something good to fill his belly and a cool shirt to cover it up sounds like a plan!

JFF June 2018 Challenge Shaped Cards 004E

I found a fun Hawaiian shirt card design by Tami White on Pinterest and just had to make one for myself!

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHh7kXYreSI]

I took Tami's video tutorial one step further by making a set of cutting instructions. If you only want to make one card, use one sheet of 8.5 x 11 (white or light colored card stock) and ink, color and stamp your heart out. I like to mix things up a bit, so I recommend cutting a sheet of light colored card stock and a darker or patterned paper to mix and match the pieces for a fun "twofer" design!

Aloha shirt cutting instructions

These instructions are designed for cutting with a paper trimmer.

  1. Cut one sheet of 8.5 x 11 card stock vertically at 4.25.

  2. Place one of the 4.25 x 11 pieces horizontally in the trimmer and cut at 9, 8, and 5.5 inches.

  3. Cut the 4.25 x 2 inch piece horizontally at 4 and 2.

  4. Score the remaining 4.25 x 11 horizontally at 5.5 inches and fold. This will be the card base. If the card base is dark, you can cut a light colored 4 x 5.25 panel to adhere on the inside of the card for writing your message.

  5. Fold the ends of the 4.25 x 1 inch strip toward the center and at a downward angle for the shirt collar.

  6. The two 2 x 2 inch pieces will be sleeves.

  7. The 4.25 x 5.5 piece will be the card panel.

  8. Decorate the pieces as desired.

  9. Follow the instructions in the video for more detailed folding and placement.

I used the JFF Dolphins and Palms Silhouette stamp to decorate the front of my tropical shirt!

I added some faux stitiching, "buttons", and a little rhinestone starfish for bling!

JFF June 2018 Challenge 005E

There's even room inside to write a little something. A shirt fit for a king..."King of the Couch"of course!

JFF June 2018 Challenge 001E

My card is part of the new JFF  Shaped Cards challenge that started yesterday.
